Liechtenstein Company & Beneficial Ownership Directory

Company register search for 40 Liechtenstein companies, plus shareholder, officer and beneficial ownership records sourced directly from official government registries.

Register & Ownership Overview

Liechtenstein company register data sits in the Handelsregister (Commercial Register), free to search at handelsregister.li, linked to the VwbP beneficial-owner register under the VwbPG Act. It's restricted to authorities, obliged entities on a fee-paying application, and third parties who can show a credible AML purpose, at a 25% ownership threshold for ordinary companies. That percentage test stops applying entirely once a Stiftung (foundation) or Anstalt sits in the chain — unique Liechtenstein structures with no shareholders, identified instead by founder, beneficiaries, and protector. Commercial Register data verifies entity existence and directors directly; VwbP data verifies beneficial owners where the applicant has access, but private family foundation beneficiaries can sit in by-laws that appear nowhere in any public or authority-facing register at all.

Analysis

What this data actually tells you about Liechtenstein

Liechtenstein’s central company register, the Handelsregister (Commercial Register), is administered by the Amt für Justiz (Office of Justice) in Vaduz. The register’s history tells a genuinely striking story on its own: registered legal entities grew from roughly 1,000 in 1945 to a peak of approximately 84,000 around the year 2000 — against a resident population then of only about 33,000 — before falling by roughly 71% to 24,328 entities by 2021, driven overwhelmingly by the collapse of Stiftung (foundation), trust, and Anstalt (establishment) registrations following Liechtenstein’s post-2008 transparency reforms. This figure should not be confused with Liechtenstein’s much smaller population of genuinely operating businesses: the Office of Statistics counted just 5,508 operating enterprises with actual employees at the end of 2023, meaning the large majority of registered legal entities in Liechtenstein are passive holding vehicles rather than operating companies — a distinction worth keeping straight when researching any specific Liechtenstein entity. Liechtenstein also does not publish its own foreign-direct-investment statistics at all, a direct consequence of its currency and customs union with Switzerland (in place since 1923, with the Swiss franc adopted as legal currency in 1924) meaning Liechtenstein has no separate balance-of-payments accounts of its own; researchers instead have to infer from partner-country central-bank data, which shows Liechtenstein as a substantial net outward investor into Germany, Austria, and the US relative to its size.

Liechtenstein’s beneficial-ownership register (Verzeichnis der wirtschaftlich berechtigten Personen, VwbP), in force since August 1, 2019, uses a genuinely two-tiered access model: ordinary companies (Annex 1) can be searched via written application, with fee-based third-party disclosure and free access for banks and authorities, while trusts and foundations (Annex 2) — precisely the vehicles Liechtenstein has historically been associated with — require a third party to demonstrate a “legitimate interest” before access is granted. No clear evidence was found that Liechtenstein changed this access model specifically in response to the CJEU’s November 2022 ruling against unconditional public BO access; as an EEA/EFTA state outside direct CJEU jurisdiction, Liechtenstein’s tiered, legitimate-interest-gated model for trusts and foundations already predated the ruling that forced several EU member states to build an equivalent structure. Liechtenstein’s reform story has real depth: after a 2008 scandal in which a former LGT Bank employee sold stolen client data to German intelligence, implicating roughly 1,000 wealthy Germans suspected of hiding some €4 billion via Liechtenstein trusts and foundations, the country signed a disclosure facility with the UK (in force September 1, 2009 to December 31, 2015, offering reduced penalties for voluntary disclosure), adopted the OECD’s Common Reporting Standard early (law passed November 6, 2015, first automatic exchanges in 2017), and was removed from the FATF’s blacklist in 2001 after an earlier money-laundering listing in 2000; its most recent MONEYVAL evaluation, published June 29, 2022, placed Liechtenstein on the regular (not enhanced) follow-up track, a genuinely strong recent compliance result.

End-2023 figures from the Office of Statistics (Amt für Statistik), Principality of Liechtenstein, via the Liechtenstein Institute’s "Economic and Financial Data on Liechtenstein 2025": of 5,508 operating enterprises (i.e. businesses with actual employees, not the much larger population of passive Anstalt/Stiftung/trust holding vehicles also registered in the Handelsregister), 4,859 (88.2%) had 1–9 employees, 528 (9.6%) had 10–49, 102 (1.9%) had 50–249, and 19 (0.3%) had 250 or more. Liechtenstein has one operating enterprise for roughly every 7 residents, compared with roughly 1 per 14 in Switzerland and 1 per 24 in Germany. Who uses Liechtenstein ownership data

The three checks this page's data is most often run for.

🧾

KYB onboarding

Verifying a Liechtenstein counterparty means confirming the beneficial owner behind the entity and evidencing where that answer came from, not just pulling the registered name.

🛡️

AML and sanctions screening

Sanctions exposure often sits above the operating company, in a holding layer registered elsewhere. Screening the local entity alone will not surface it; screening the resolved ownership chain will.

📈

Supplier and credit risk

Only 3 Liechtenstein entities have digitized accounts on file, so group membership is often a better solvency signal than a standalone balance sheet.
