Analysis

What this data actually tells you

Agriculture is a policy-driven, food-security-motivated niche sector rather than an economically significant one in GDP terms, centred on high-tech, land-efficient urban and vertical farming and aquaculture rather than traditional agriculture.

The government’s November 2025 scaling-back of its self-sufficiency ambitions reflects the commercial realities facing local farms rather than declining policy priority for food security itself.

What changed recently

Sector-specific developments that change how this data is used. Each carries a verification date so it can be refreshed on a schedule.

The EU deforestation rules apply from 30 December 2026

The EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) requires operators placing cattle, wood, cocoa, coffee, palm oil or soya on the EU market to prove their supply chains are deforestation-free. After two postponements — originally due 30 December 2024, then pushed to 30 December 2025 — the Council of the EU adopted a further revision in December 2025 moving the application date for all operators to 30 December 2026, with an additional six-month allowance for micro and small operators to 30 June 2027. For Singapore operators and exporters supplying the EU market, this is now the operative compliance deadline.

Revised-Food-Security-Targets Verification

Singapore is a net food importer of over 90% of its food supply, with 153 land-based and 72 sea-based licensed food farms in 2024 producing an estimated S$231 million in local output, covering roughly 8% of fibre (leafy vegetable) and 26% of protein (seafood/eggs) consumption. In November 2025 the government revised its long-standing “30 by 30” food-security goal to more modest 2035 targets, 20% of fibre and 30% of protein consumption from local production, reflecting farm closures and high operating costs. Counterparties verify current-year production and target figures directly against the Singapore Food Agency.
