Politecnico di Bari is a public Italian state university based in Bari, in the Apulia region of southern Italy. It was established as an autonomous institution under Law No. 245 of 7 August 1990, growing out of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Bari, and began independent academic activity in the 1991/92 academic year. It is the youngest polytechnic university in Italy and the only one located in the country’s south.
The university specializes in engineering, architecture and applied physical sciences. Since the reorganization mandated by Law No. 240/2010, its academic and research activity has been structured entirely around five departments: Electrical and Information Engineering; Mechanics, Mathematics and Management; Civil, Environmental, Land, Building Engineering and Chemistry (DICATECh); Architecture, Construction and Design; and Physics, the last operated jointly with the University of Bari Aldo Moro. The Department of Mechanics, Mathematics and Management holds Italy’s Department of Excellence designation for 2023-2027.
Its main campus, named after Ernesto Quagliariello, is in Bari’s San Pasquale district, with additional teaching space in the Japigia district and the city’s historic centre, plus a decentralized site in Taranto hosting the interdepartmental Magna Grecia centre. As of the 2024/25 academic year, Politecnico di Bari had approximately 10,700 to 11,000 enrolled students across bachelor’s, master’s, single-cycle and doctoral programmes, offering roughly 15 bachelor’s degree courses, 18 master’s degree courses, one single-cycle degree course, and ten doctoral programmes. As a public university, it is governed by a Rector, Academic Senate and Board of Directors under Italian higher-education law, and does not have shareholders or a corporate ownership structure.
