NACEBEL 2008 A
Sector Overview — Belgium

Approximately 120,515 real businesses operate in the Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing sector across Belgium. Agriculture looks like the simplest sector to verify — a farm, a name, a plot of land. It rarely is. Ownership here often runs through family trusts, cooperatives, and, in many jurisdictions, foreign-land-ownership restrictions that route control through a domestic holding entity instead of the operator you would expect. The sector spans crop and livestock farms, forestry and logging operators, and commercial fisheries and aquaculture producers feeding raw commodities into much longer supply chains. For due diligence, the real exposure is not the farm gate — it is the subsidy filings, land-registry disclosures, and supply-chain traceability rules sitting on top of it.

50 companies in this sector are indexed on Zavia so far, part of a continually growing dataset.

Beneficial-ownership and registration rules for Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing companies in Belgium follow the same national framework as every other sector there.

Analysis

What this data actually tells you

Agriculture in Belgium is mid-transition through a mandatory legal-form restructuring. Until recently, the landbouwvennootschap (agricultural partnership) was a dedicated legal form combining partnership flexibility with a choice between personal and corporate income tax, and letting a managing partner-tenant transfer a lease without the formal lease-transfer process other tenants require. Its managing partners, however, carried unlimited personal liability for the partnership’s obligations.

That form has since been phased out: every landbouwvennootschap had to convert to one of several successor structures — a BVLO, CVLO, commVLO or VOFLO — by 31 December 2023. For verification, a Belgian farm’s current legal form is likely the result of that relatively recent, mandatory conversion rather than a longstanding structural choice, and confirming which successor form it actually became changes what liability protection its operators now carry — a real distinction from the old landbouwvennootschap’s unlimited-liability managing partners.

What changed recently

Sector-specific developments that change how this data is used. Each carries a verification date so it can be refreshed on a schedule.

The EU deforestation rules apply from 30 December 2026

The EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) requires operators placing cattle, wood, cocoa, coffee, palm oil or soya on the EU market to prove their supply chains are deforestation-free. After two postponements — originally due 30 December 2024, then pushed to 30 December 2025 — the Council of the EU adopted a further revision in December 2025 moving the application date for all operators to 30 December 2026, with an additional six-month allowance for micro and small operators to 30 June 2027. For Belgium operators and exporters supplying the EU market, this is now the operative compliance deadline.

Who uses Belgium agriculture, forestry and fishing ownership data

The three checks this sector's data is most often run for.

🌍

EUDR supply-chain due diligence

Proving a Belgian wood, soy-feed or cattle supplier is who they claim to be, upstream of the first EU-bound trader, before the December 2026 deadline. Belgian farms increasingly operate through one of several successor company forms after the landbouwvennootschap (agricultural partnership) was phased out.

🚜

Post-landbouwvennootschap legal-form transition

Belgium’s dedicated agricultural partnership form, the landbouwvennootschap, had to convert to a BVLO, CVLO, commVLO or VOFLO by 31 December 2023 — meaning a farm’s current legal form reflects a relatively recent, mandatory restructuring rather than a long-standing choice.

🏦

Managing-partner unlimited liability check

Under the former landbouwvennootschap structure, managing partners carried unlimited personal liability for the partnership’s obligations — confirming which successor form a farm actually converted to changes what liability protection, if any, its operators now have.
