Analysis

What this data actually tells you

Agriculture looks like the simplest sector to verify and is one of the hardest. The operating unit is usually small, often a single family, and the register reflects that: the overwhelming majority of French section A entities have no employees on file at all. But the ownership question rarely stops at the farm. Land sits in a GFA or an SCI, machinery in a CUMA, the marketing arm in a cooperative, and the eventual buyer of the crop is a trading group several borders away. Verifying an agricultural counterparty means resolving four small entities and one large one, not looking up a single company.

The second complication is legal form. A GAEC or an EARL is a civil company, not a commercial one, and its members are declared differently from an SAS shareholder — so screening logic built for commercial forms silently under-reports control in this sector. Where a farm has been bought by an investment vehicle, the transaction almost always shows up as a share transfer, not a land sale.

The EU deforestation rules apply from 30 December 2026

The EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) requires operators placing cattle, wood, cocoa, coffee, palm oil or soya on the EU market to prove their supply chains are deforestation-free. After two postponements — originally due 30 December 2024, then pushed to 30 December 2025 — the Council of the EU adopted a further revision in December 2025 moving the application date for all operators to 30 December 2026, with an additional six-month allowance for micro and small operators to 30 June 2027. For French forestry and agricultural exporters, this is now the operative compliance deadline.

Farmland control now follows share transfers

French farmland sales have long been subject to SAFER pre-emption rights. Since the “loi Sempastous” (law n°2021-1756 of 23 December 2021), that control has extended to transfers of shares in companies whose main purpose is agricultural, once a transfer would push one buyer’s controlled surface past a regional threshold — closing the loophole where consolidation was structured as a share sale instead of a land sale. For due diligence, the meaningful change of control in French agriculture is now as often visible in the shareholder record as in the land registry.

Who uses France agriculture, forestry and fishing ownership data

The three checks this sector's data is most often run for.

🌍

EUDR supply-chain due diligence

Proving a wood or soy supplier is who they claim to be, upstream of the first trader, before the December 2026 date. Requires identity and ownership on small entities that file very little.

🌾

Land control and subsidy screening

Change of control in French farming shows up as a share transfer, not a land sale. Shareholder records are where a foreign or investor acquisition becomes visible.

🏦

Agri-lending and input credit

Few French farm entities file usable accounts, so exposure is usually assessed on group membership and director history rather than on a balance sheet.
