Approximately 86,775 real businesses operate in the Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing sector across United Kingdom. Agriculture looks like the simplest sector to verify — a farm, a name, a plot of land. It rarely is. Ownership here often runs through family trusts, cooperatives, and, in many jurisdictions, foreign-land-ownership restrictions that route control through a domestic holding entity instead of the operator you would expect. The sector spans crop and livestock farms, forestry and logging operators, and commercial fisheries and aquaculture producers feeding raw commodities into much longer supply chains. For due diligence, the real exposure is not the farm gate — it is the subsidy filings, land-registry disclosures, and supply-chain traceability rules sitting on top of it.
82 companies in this sector are indexed on Zavia so far, part of a continually growing dataset.
Beneficial-ownership and registration rules for Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing companies in United Kingdom follow the same national framework as every other sector there.

Analysis
What this data actually tells you
UK farms sit at the opposite end of the registration spectrum from most of the EU. A sole trader or an ordinary partnership — still the default structure for a large share of British farms — has no obligation to file anything at Companies House at all, so the absence of a UK farm from the company register is normal, not suspicious. Where a farm does incorporate, it’s usually a limited company or LLP taken on for liability protection or succession planning, and that’s where ownership and control actually become visible in a filed register. There is no restriction on foreign ownership of UK farmland, unlike several EU jurisdictions.
The structural complication here isn’t legal form, it’s tenancy. A significant share of English and Welsh farmland is farmed by a tenant under an arrangement separate from who owns it — either an Agricultural Holdings Act 1986 tenancy, which protects the tenant with succession rights and only ends on strict terms, or a Farm Business Tenancy under the 1995 Act, which runs on ordinary contract terms with no succession. Verifying who actually controls a UK farm means identifying which of the two you’re looking at, since incorporation status and company filings only describe one side of that relationship.

The EU deforestation rules apply from 30 December 2026
The EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) requires operators placing cattle, wood, cocoa, coffee, palm oil or soya on the EU market to prove their supply chains are deforestation-free. After two postponements — originally due 30 December 2024, then pushed to 30 December 2025 — the Council of the EU adopted a further revision in December 2025 moving the application date for all operators to 30 December 2026, with an additional six-month allowance for micro and small operators to 30 June 2027. For United Kingdom operators and exporters supplying the EU market, this is now the operative compliance deadline.

Inheritance tax relief for farms is capped from 6 April 2026
Agricultural Property Relief (APR) has historically let most working farmland pass to the next generation free of inheritance tax. From 6 April 2026, a combined £2.5 million allowance caps 100% relief across Agricultural Property Relief and Business Property Relief together, with qualifying assets above that threshold receiving only 50% relief — an effective 20% inheritance tax on the excess. The government raised the original £1 million proposal to £2.5 million on 23 December 2025 after industry pushback, and estimates around 85% of estates claiming APR will still pay no extra tax as a result. For screening, far more UK farm ownership transitions than before will now involve deliberate estate planning — trusts, lifetime gifts, restructured shareholdings — specifically to stay under the new threshold, which shows up in company and shareholder filings rather than in farming activity itself.

Who uses United Kingdom agriculture, forestry and fishing ownership data
The three checks this sector's data is most often run for.
EUDR supply-chain due diligence
Proving a UK wood, soy-feed or cattle-product supplier is who they claim to be, upstream of the first EU-bound trader, before the December 2026 deadline. Many UK farms are unregistered sole traders or partnerships, with no Companies House record to check at all.
Tenancy and landlord screening
A large share of UK farmland is farmed under a tenancy separate from ownership — an Agricultural Holdings Act 1986 tenancy or a post-1995 Farm Business Tenancy. Verifying who controls a UK farm means checking whether you’re looking at the landowner or the operating tenant.
Agri-lending and input credit
Sole-trader and ordinary-partnership farms file no public accounts at all, so lenders and input suppliers typically assess UK farm exposure through land ownership records and tenancy status rather than company filings.
