China Company & Beneficial Ownership Directory

Company register search for 197,345 China companies, plus shareholder, officer and beneficial ownership records sourced directly from official government registries.

Register & Ownership Overview

China company register data sits in NECIPS (国家企业信用信息公示系统, National Enterprise Credit Information Publicity System), free and public via SAMR, listing shareholders, directors, and their contribution amounts. The Administrative Measures on Beneficial Owner Information, effective November 2024, keep BOI data inside PBOC systems, accessible only to authorities and AML-obligated institutions, at a 25% equity, profit, or control threshold. Small businesses under RMB 10 million registered capital with only natural-person shareholders are exempt, and state-owned enterprises file a senior managing officer instead of a natural-person owner where none exists. NECIPS shareholder data verifies directly at source, free and immediate; the natural person behind a Chinese entity still requires cross-referencing NECIPS shareholders against parent-jurisdiction filings, since Hong Kong's own Significant Controllers Register for entities in the chain stays closed to foreign requesters too.

Analysis

What this data actually tells you about China

China’s closest equivalent to a national company register is the State Administration for Market Regulation’s (SAMR) National Enterprise Credit Information Publicity System, where every registered business receives an 18-digit Unified Social Credit Code at incorporation. As of end-November 2024, China had 189 million registered market entities in force, of which 60.867 million were enterprises (the remainder are individual/self-employed businesses, a legally distinct and simpler registration form outnumbering enterprises roughly 2:1) — SAMR reported 25.745 million newly established market entities in full-year 2025 alone. The Fifth National Economic Census (reference date end-2023, published December 26, 2024) found 33.270 million legal-person units engaged in secondary and tertiary industry activity, up 52.7% from the Fourth Census in 2018, employing 428.984 million people; wholesale and retail trade was by far the largest single sector at 30.6% of all legal-person units.

China introduced its first-ever beneficial-ownership filing requirement via a joint PBOC/SAMR regulation issued April 29, 2024 and effective November 1, 2024 (entities existing before that date had until November 1, 2025 to file); this is a regulatory filing system rather than a fully public-searchable register like those common in the EU, with an exemption for entities with registered capital under RMB 10 million where all shareholders are natural persons. China has been a full FATF member since 2007, with its next scheduled mutual evaluation around 2026. A genuinely important current nuance, worth stating precisely rather than flattened into a single "FDI is declining" narrative: monetary utilized FDI fell for a third consecutive year in 2025 (RMB 747.69 billion, -9.5% year-on-year, per MOFCOM), yet the NUMBER of newly registered foreign-invested enterprises actually ROSE 19.1% in 2025 to 70,392 (following +9.9% in 2024) — consistent with MOFCOM’s own characterization that investors are entering in greater numbers but with smaller, more cautious capital commitments. Foreign investment restrictions in manufacturing were completely eliminated nationwide effective November 1, 2024, under China’s negative-list system, which now covers 29 restricted items economy-wide (down from 31).

China does not use the EU’s employee-count-only Micro/Small/Medium/Large standard. Its own classification (jointly issued by MIIT, NBS, NDRC, and MOF in 2011, refined by NBS in 2017) combines employee headcount with revenue or asset thresholds that vary by industry sector — for example, an industrial (manufacturing) enterprise needs both 1,000+ employees AND RMB 400 million+ revenue to count as "large," while a small industrial enterprise needs only 20+ employees and RMB 3 million+ revenue. The three rows above describe the composition WITHIN China’s 18.07 million SME legal-person units specifically, from the Fourth National Economic Census (2018 reference date, published Dec 2019) — the most recent breakdown of this kind found; a comparable Fifth Census (2023) size-class breakdown does not appear to have been published as of this research. These percentages exclude large enterprises entirely (they describe only the SME sub-population) and should not be read as summing to 100% of all Chinese enterprises. Source: National Bureau of Statistics of China, Fourth National Economic Census series report No. 12 (originally Dec 2019, republished Feb 2023).

Foreign-controlled entities

0.9% foreign-controlled

Among industrial (mining, manufacturing, and utilities) legal-person units specifically, foreign-invested enterprises represented 0.9% of units by count but 6.4% of industrial employment as of end-2023 (Fifth National Economic Census) — a separate, similarly-sized category of Hong Kong/Macao/Taiwan-invested enterprises represented 1.0% of units and also 6.4% of employment. Both figures show foreign and HK/Macao/Taiwan-invested firms are far larger than the industrial-sector average by headcount despite their small share of entity count. This data is limited to the industrial (secondary) sector only — a comparable economy-wide foreign-ownership entity-count figure was not found published. Monetary utilized FDI figures exist separately (RMB 747.69 billion in 2025, down 9.5% year-on-year, MOFCOM) but are referenced in narrative prose rather than here, since they measure capital flow, not entity or employment share.

Who uses China ownership data

The three checks this page's data is most often run for.

🧾

KYB onboarding

Verifying a China counterparty means confirming the beneficial owner behind the entity and evidencing where that answer came from, not just pulling the registered name.

🛡️

AML and sanctions screening

Sanctions exposure often sits above the operating company, in a holding layer registered elsewhere. Screening the local entity alone will not surface it; screening the resolved ownership chain will.

📈

Supplier and credit risk

Only 6,341 China entities have digitized accounts on file, so group membership is often a better solvency signal than a standalone balance sheet.
