Analysis

What this data actually tells you about Senegal

Senegal’s economy is being reshaped by two forces at once: a new hydrocarbons sector and a fiscal reckoning. President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, elected in March 2024 with Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, audited state finances soon after taking office and revealed that public debt had been substantially under-reported by the previous government — the IMF put total public debt at 132% of GDP at end-2024, with S&P Global Ratings estimating roughly $13 billion in hidden liabilities. The IMF suspended a $1.8 billion credit facility in October 2024 before negotiating a new program.

At the same time, Senegal became an oil and gas producer for the first time: the Sangomar offshore oilfield began production in June 2024, and the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim gas project, shared with Mauritania, shipped its first LNG cargo in April 2025. Combined oil and gas revenue is projected at CFA 753.6 billion (about $1.3 billion), and GDP growth for 2025 is estimated at 6.7%, largely driven by this new production, though growth is expected to slow sharply once the initial ramp-up effect fades.

The business landscape remains overwhelmingly informal and small-scale: Senegal’s most recent comprehensive enterprise census (ANSD’s Recensement Général des Entreprises, dating to 2016) found that small and medium enterprises make up 99.8% of all economic units, with individual sole-proprietor enterprises alone accounting for 82.3%. Roughly 97% of economic units and 93.7% of workers operate informally, per WIEGO’s analysis of ANSD data — a structure that has changed only gradually even as business registration time has fallen from 58 days to about 2, per investment agency APIX.

Senegal attracted CFA 5,448 billion (roughly $9.7 billion) in private investment in 2024, per APIX, concentrated heavily around Dakar — 39.5% of all enterprises are located in the Dakar region alone. The government’s 25-year “Vision 2050” development plan aims to channel new oil and gas revenue toward cutting the fiscal deficit to 3% of GDP and sustaining 6.5% average annual growth, even as the debt revelations have complicated the near-term fiscal picture.

Who uses Senegal ownership data

The three checks this page's data is most often run for.

🧾

KYB onboarding

Verifying a Senegal counterparty means confirming the beneficial owner behind the entity and evidencing where that answer came from, not just pulling the registered name.

🛡️

AML and sanctions screening

Sanctions exposure often sits above the operating company, in a holding layer registered elsewhere. Screening the local entity alone will not surface it; screening the resolved ownership chain will.

📈

Supplier and credit risk

Filed accounts cover a limited share of the register in most jurisdictions, so group membership is often a better solvency signal than a standalone balance sheet.
